Century-old Carnegie library to be converted into boutique hotel
A historic Carnegie library built in 1904 is entering a new chapter as it is thoughtfully restored into a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel. Located in the heart of St. Joseph, Michigan, the building has stood for over a century as a symbol of knowledge, community, and timeless architecture. Now, under the vision of new owners John and Shannon, the space is being carefully reimagined—preserving its rich history while transforming it into a destination that blends heritage with modern hospitality.

Originally established through Andrew Carnegie’s library initiative, the building served generations of the St. Joseph community as a place of learning, curiosity, and connection. Its walls carry stories from decades past—students studying late into the evening, families exploring literature together, and a town built around shared knowledge. While the building eventually transitioned out of its original use, its historical significance has remained deeply rooted in the community.
John and Shannon saw more than just an old structure—they saw potential. With a deep appreciation for preservation and design, they’ve taken on the ambitious task of restoring the library into a boutique hotel that honors its legacy. Rather than stripping away its identity, the restoration focuses on maintaining original architectural elements while introducing refined, modern touches that elevate the experience.
The vision goes beyond just a place to stay. Each room will reflect the building’s history, while updated amenities ensure a comfortable, elevated experience for guests. The goal is simple but powerful: create a space where history is not only preserved, but lived in.

One of the most exciting additions to the transformation is the lower-level “Archive Lounge,” a speakeasy-style bar designed to complement the building’s historic character. Tucked beneath the main level, the lounge will offer an intimate, atmospheric experience—bringing together vintage charm and modern design in a way that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
“This building has always been part of the community’s story. We’re just continuing that story in a new way.” — Ownership
