Bringing the Library Back to Life
Over the last six months the old Carnegie Library has been buzzing with work. Crews have updated utilities, reinforced the foundation, and even opened parts of the street to make room for new systems. Every step is about turning the library into a boutique hotel that feels fresh and comfortable while keeping its original character. The goal is simple: give guests a beautiful place to stay and let them experience a piece of St. Joseph’s history.

Preserving the Heart of the Library
Inside, the original windows, woodwork, and masonry remain the focus. These details tell the story of the building and are carefully cleaned and restored rather than hidden. From tall reading-room ceilings to handcrafted trim, the historic feel will stay alive in every room.
Restoring and Enhancing the Exterior
Outside, every historic window is being repainted and repaired while keeping the original frames and panels. A new front patio is taking shape with bricks brought in from Chicago in the early 1900s, adding charm that fits the building’s age.

Building a Strong Foundation for the Future
Down below, crews are completely redoing the entire basement to create a speakeasy-style lounge bar called the Archive Lounge. New concrete floors have been poured and smoothed, and the ceiling has been rebuilt with fresh insulation and piping. These upgrades strengthen the structure and set the stage for the lounge, ensuring the space is safe, comfortable, and ready to welcome guests for decades to come.
